Oh, my. What a piece of history this is to me. I absolutely must share and archive it.
This is a midi rendition of Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana (Or maybe it’s Smells Like Nirvana by Weird Al Yancovic, I can’t tell) on an oldschool midi card that’s getting harder and harder to find. It’s a hardware synthesizer on the sound card, so that means there aren’t even any soundfont packs floating around the internet to emulate this sound. As you can imagine it made most midis sound like crap, but WOW, doesn’t it make this midi sound awesome?
Found in an old Doom 1 WAD, back in the day when everyone used DEU and custom levels were all the rage. Recorded from a Windows 95 machine over to a capable laptop using a double-ended headphone cord. To this day, brings back fond memories of shotgunning imps and barons to this riveting music.
Ironically, hearing this song in Doom for the first time is what got me into liking video game music… and it turned out not even to be a video game theme.

I love Teen Spirit!
are you still active in this department of FM synthesizer uploads? I am the one below who commented 8 years who, whoa how come nobody else is digging this beauty? anyways cheers damn I love falling back to the classic says of the 90's nostalgic sounds from a great piece of hardware.
Oh that is true eh it is so much more joyful with a real FM Chip YMF2612 or Crystal sound chip based off of Yamaha's original and well it is juts aways a great thing to hear the FM Chips kickin the great classics!
This sounds like OPL-3 or OPL-2 FM synthesis being played on the midi. I can tell it is similar to it because I know that it sounds like it but a bit different in some way. I like it also it does make it sound great.
