Ender's Game: Movie vs. Book + Review

Ender's Game: Movie vs. Book + Review

CBG19 compares the superior book version of Ender’s Game to the new movie version.

SPOILER WARNING: Topics covered include: The ending of the book and scenes in the book that were left out of the film.

SIDENOTE:
Yes I am aware of the Dune Miniseries, but it was so low budget and so not up to par that I don’t acknowledge it. I want a Dune show that matches the quality of Game of Thrones.

NO COMMENT NOVEMBER:
Similar to the time when Ender was at battle school and was blocked from e-mails, Comments are disabled on all videos during “No Comment November” as we concentrate on putting out more content and avoid distractions. Thank you. 🙂

I loved the movie honestly, I am not against the fact that the book is better, I do agree on that but now that I watched the movie, I want both to watch a TV show for it(if they ever do it) and to read the books. I am pretty sure I am gonna enjoy them.

There were a couple of points made about the book that was wrong in this video. First, religion wasn't banned or anything like that. There was a population law that many religious groups chafed under (particularly the Catholics), but there was no specific repression of religion in any direct sense. In fact religion flourished in virtually all its forms after the events of Ender's Game centuries into the future.

Second, Peter did NOT make Ender feel bad to guilt trip him into writing about him. He simply pointed out that if Ender could find understanding with an alien species, then he could probably do it with his own brother personal issues aside. He specifically asked Ender to speak for him after he died so that future people would be able to understand who he was and why he did what he did. By the time Peter was an old man he had mellowed significantly, to the point that Ender had a hard time reconciling him with his younger self from his memory. Even so, Ender did as he asked, although he didn't actually take up being a Speaker for the Dead professionally until years later after witnessing a Speaking by another Speaker who had unknowingly been inspired by Ender himself from his book The Hive Queen and The Hegemon. Ender and his sister Valentine were able to travel centuries into the future by almost constantly traveling at near Light Speed causing time relativity between them and the people living on planets, so Peter was an old man while Ender was basically still a kid, a young teen.

I think their casting choice for Bonzo Madrid was garbage….ender had to look down to face him!

This was a bit of a disappointing review. Spot on accurate for the books, but I honestly have even less of a desire to see the movie now. I agree it should've been a series instead of a movie, especially since if it did well we could have gotten an Ender' Shadow series as well because Bean's storyline is so damn good. But excellent review and I plan to check out your other works too.

Why the movie is better? I can lay on the couch and it tells ME the story

Why the book is better? Can fix a wobbly table.

And I enjoyed the movie enought to buy it Day 1 on Blu Ray. And was thoroughly disappointed that it is another abandoned series.

I came here expecting an explanation or comparison of the movie vs the book but instead I'm getting this chick who is just running her mouth on and on about almost nothing, as if she is hinting around about why you should read the book but she's hiding the reasons why but hinting at her reading it over you.
Is she just trying to pass time or make up a report about a book she hasnt read either because you havent read it either you dont know the difference.
Wait, maybe now around 7 minutes she might actually say something but I am guessing she actually wont…

This would be interesting and much better if she were actually just completely topless, she damn near is anyways, why hold back the good stuff…

yea the book was sooo much deeper emotinaly. but for me I saw the story mostly from Val's POV. I think its because as an older sibling myself, I got her side if things quite well, and would honestly feel the same in that (unlikely) situation. probably one of the most heart wrenching parts was the part in the books when ender and Val meet and go on the lake. how ender had changed and wasnt the little brother to be protected… but a cold soldier. might seem like a small detail to some, but not here.

To be honest, my opinion is that the book is a great BOOK, and the movie was a great MOVIE. Sometimes you just have to watch stuff from a moviewatcher's eyes, but I respect your opinion.

movies definitely have time to slow down and delve deep…..just that the masses don't care about it and won't go watch those movies sadly. For me I love it when movies slow down and start to go into deeper slower scenes that aren't just action and develop lore. I see this a lot in japanese anime in general where there's much more just dialogue and explanation rather than just action. Kinda blade runner esque. Maybe if Ender's Game was 4 hours like the lord of the rings extended edition XD

The part of the movie I was most disappointed with had to be the ending. They failed to accurately portray Ender's motivations in that final battle, as he wasn't trying to "win" – he was trying to do something so utterly reprehensible that he'd get kicked out. They also didn't show just how worn down the kids were from being put through sleepless hell for months on end, which informs Ender's motivation.

Ender's Game didn't work well as a movie, but Speaker for the Dead (and the sequels, Xenocide and Children of the Mind) would be even more impossible to adapt. The imagery, the violence, and the psychology of those books is absolutely insane.

if you read all the sequels, speaker for the dead, xenocide, children of the mind you find out that it's definitely not for kids, as it the tone shifts dramatically to sci-fi philosophy

Everyone here saying "the book was so much better than the movie, it shouldn't have been made". Well, I actually read the book after I saw the movie, yes true, the book had more depth and was absolutely better in many ways, but for ppl who havent read it, the movie was none less intriguing and amazing.

The ending is well done. What a devastating idea, I thought. A young boy has his hubris manipulated to make him erradicate an entire species in one genocidal blast. The weight he would carry. The adult he'd become with a foundation of mistrust, guilt, shame, and anxiety would make for a good "15 years later" follow up.

The massive morale dilemmas and their impact on Ender and his family members were the most compelling part of the books. How do you decide what to do when there are no good solutions? Choose this and millions die, choose that and billions die. None of that was in the movie.

I have been reading a lot of Asimov's books since I saw these video. So it was a kind of happy accident for me because before that I didn't use to read sifi books. Also I like the Ender's saga !. So thanks for this video.

I've read Ender's Game more times than I can count and I was so hopeful for the movie, but it really did fall flat. I can't even enjoy it because they butcher a lot of significant moments. When it came out in 2013 I raged to my boyfriend about it but I didn't have anyone to talk to that had actually read the book and knew what my frustration was. It may be 2018 now, but at least this makes me feel better.

I'd also like to point out that I felt that casting such prolific, Academy Award Winning actors detracted from movie, as I felt like the cost of production was sunk mainly into the actors rather than making the Enderverse more realistic. There was already such a large fan base that casting lesser known, talented actors could have provided similar effects and with more money directed to special effects (ex: that first launch to Battle School, eek!).

In the end, I love all the actors but to me, Ender's Game the movie was to the book what Eragon the movie was to book fans; ie: not good.

I love this review. I read Ender's Game for the first time when I was 11 and every time after that has simply made me love this book and the two spin-off series even more. Hopefully others will watch this and give the books a try.
(I actually got one of my friends to read the book when the movie trailers first showed up, which means that when we watched the movie we were equally horrified. Felt really bad about that.)
